 Spring Newsletter 2022

The Year in Review

On August 13, 2021, The Friends presented an outdoor movie sponsored by a generous bequest from the Stella and Frank Ricciardi Trust. The movie was shown on a giant blow-up screen in the parking lot of St. Anselm’s Church to a sold out crowd. Despite the heat and the mosquitos, the crowd enjoyed the Disney movie “The Invincibles”. We want to especially thank St Anselm’s for hosting this event.

In addition to our summer movie, The Friends of the Goodnow Library presented six well attended virtual zoom programs during the 2021-2022 fiscal year. From Judy Bloomburg’s presentation of her fabulous travel adventures and beautiful photos of all her far flung destinations to our favorite chefs, Leslie Cerier and Liz Barbour, our programs have been enjoyed by many. This spring we hope you enjoyed our series of wonderful art history programs covering famous art couples, Paris cafes and impressionism, and Van Gogh, each presented by art educator Jane Oneail. The very interesting aspect of presenting zoom programs is that our reach is far beyond our Sudbury borders and attracts participants from all over the United States. This new technology offers great possibilities for libraries to connect with one another for even more programming in the future.

We are proud to have distributed a portion of our huge collection of donated books to many worthy causes in Sudbury. The Friends sorted and distributed nearly 2000 preschool books to Sudbury pre-schools and day care centers. Curtis Middle School was the recipient of most of our young adult collection. Sudbury elementary schools happily accepted our K-5 collection. We have gathered hard cover books covering politics and best sellers; some in large print, for our senior citizens. We have helped to fill many of the little free libraries you see throughout Sudbury.

The Friends continue to be active, serving the community and continuing to promote the Goodnow Library and its resources. While we did not actively fundraise this past year, we would like to thank the generous donors who continued to support our activities with both their presence and their monetary donations. We greatly appreciate the trust and the support given to us by the Sudbury community.

Annual Election
The Friends board would like to present the following slate of officers for the 2022-2023 year.

Proposed Slate
President: Alice Levine
Vice President: Susan Petitt
Clerk: Lisa Cornacchia
Treasurer: Laura Dowling

The board will meet on June 24, 2022 at 7:00 PM for our annual meeting. As contributing members you are welcome to attend and vote for officers at the June 24th meeting. Please e-mail the Friends at friendsofgoodnow@gmail.com with your request and we will provide you with a zoom link for the meeting.

Friends of the Goodnow Library Donate More Than 1,000 Books to Local Preschools

It may be cold and snowy outside, with ice on the way, but members of the Friends have been and continue to be very busy working hard on behalf of the members of the Sudbury community.

Over the past several weeks, members of the Friends of the Goodnow Library have sorted through the preschool books donated to the Friends.  More than 1,000 books have been delivered to local preschools to serve the youngest members of our community.  Aruna's Place, Bright Horizons, Sudbury Extended Day, Sudbury Cooperative Pre-School, Next Generation and Wright Farm Child Care all shared their delight and gratitude when board members delivered boxes of books.  Also, to support a diversity program, the Friends pulled books with a diversity theme for a special program created by the Sudbury Cooperative Pre-School and the Children's department of the Goodnow Library.

Happy Recipients of Friend's Book Donations!

A Letter to Our Friends
We have all enjoyed this extended period of lovely, warm, summer weather. As I write this letter, ghosts, pumpkins, witches, and spiders as well as numerous inflatable Halloween creatures are starting to appear in town. We are experiencing a chill in the air, and some fall foliage is beginning to emerge

As an independent public charity, the Friends board continues to meet monthly to plan events for our Friends and the public. We are continuing to monitor Covid 19 in the hopes that we can once again resume hosting in-person programs and gatherings.

This past August, The Friends were able to host a safe outdoor summer movie at St. Anselm Catholic Church. We would like to acknowledge and thank the Stella and Frank Ricciardi Trust for the generous bequest that made this wonderful family- friendly event possible. Thank you also to St. Anselm Catholic Church for allowing us to use their parking lot for the event and to the Sudbury Police Department and Chief Scott Nix who helped with the logistics for parking cars and safe traffic patterns

In October the Friends hosted Sudbury author Judy Bloomberg. Judy spent her time during Covid putting together photographs and anecdotes from her travels for her book Always a Traveler, Never a Tourist: In Search of People and Places on the Road less Traveled. Our thanks to Judy who gave a wonderful Zoom travelogue of her adventures featuring selected photographs from her book that is available on Amazon.

Where Have All The Books Gone?
The Friends have been very busy finding good homes for many of our books.  We will be sharing and giving away our gardening books at the Nov. 4th joint meeting of The Thursday Garden Club and the Sudbury Garden Club.  Our Young Adult books have found their way to Curtis Middle School and have been distributed to both the Library and English classrooms.

For those of you who have built and are hosting Little Free Libraries in your neighborhood, we will happily deliver an assortment of books to help supply your library with new selections. We have many boxes of wonderful children’s books. If you are a nursery school or kindergarten teacher and would like a box of books, please contact us at friendsofgoodnow@gmail.com. We would be happy to make arrangements to get books to you.

Holiday Greetings
On behalf of the Friends I want to wish everyone a happy and healthy holiday season and a Covid-free New Year!   And as always we encourage you to use the Goodnow Library.

Alice Levine, President

Summer Summary

Missing Our Friends

The onset of the Corona virus pandemic has caused disruptions to life as we know it, and we hope that all of our Friends have remained safe and well during these difficult times. Like everyone else, the Friends board and volunteers miss the normal rhythm of daily life and look forward to the reopening of our library and our community when it is safe for this to happen.

Just as the library staff has been working very hard to make as many programs, services, and resources as possible available to patrons, the Friends have also been working hard behind the scenes. We are busy planning programs and other fun activities that will be offered on Zoom. Watch for our new programs, Virtual Book Sales, our fall membership drive and free drawing, and FUNdraisers.
Friends Summer Reading Challenge
The Friends are proud sponsors of the Summer Reading Challenge for kids, teens, and adults. For every registered reader, the Friends of the Goodnow Library pledged to donate $1 to the Sudbury Community Food Pantry. Watch for an announcement of the results coming soon.
New Newsletter Format
This is our first newsletter in our new format. Newsletters will now be emailed monthly to members so that we can provide you with information in a more timely and succinct manner. We will also be sending out reminders and special announcements using this format. Encourage your friends and neighbors to join the Friends so they, too, can stay informed about all of our programs and activities. And don’t forget to renew your membership and help us support the Goodnow Library, one of Sudbury’s greatest treasures.

Virtual Book Sale

The Annual and Summer Book and Bake Sales are favorite events for the Friends.  Not only do the sales raise funds, they are a wonderful way for the community to recycle and pass down wonderful books with plenty of life left in them for others to enjoy.  Because of the current Covid-19 situation, we had to abruptly cancel our Spring 2020 Book Sale, and we're not certain when we will be able to resume this tradition.  In the meantime, we are pivoting and trying something new!  We have started weekly Virtual Pop-Up Book Sales - Click here to check it out!

Volunteer with the Friends
As the Friends embark on a new year, we would like to invite members to become more involved in the organization. Join other fun, interesting, and dedicated people in volunteering for Friends programs, events, and special projects. No long-term commitment is required; you can volunteer whatever amount of time works for you. Simply go to our website:
